How do I code the ECI with children from bilingual families?
All words and multiple words, regardless of the language in which they are communicated, should be scored as such; including those communicated in sign language. Therefore, the coder should be fluent in any language regularly used in the child’s environment. Failure to code these communications correctly will result in an invalid assessment and should not be compared to the norms, nor should they be used in intervention decision making.

Why are things such as imitation and following directions not scored on the ECI?
Although those are important forms of communication, only expressive communication is scored during the ECI.

Can more than one child be present for an IGDI assessment?
With the exception of the ESI, which was developed for a child and a peer play partner, the other IGDI’s are to be administered with one child and one adult.

Can a sibling serve as a play partner?
If that sibling is an adult, yes. Only familiar adults should serve as play partners.

Do there have to be two children to be able to administer the ESI?
It is recommended, but not required.

Does it matter what order the EPSI toys are presented?
No, as long as each toy is presented for 2 minutes, it does not matter in what order the toys are presented.
